New ASPPA Officers Announced for 2010-2011 Term
WASHINGTON, (October 17, 2010)—The American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA) today announced Thomas J. Finnegan, MSPA, CPC, QPA, as president or the organization during the opening session of the annual conference at the Gaylord Hotel, National Harbor, Md.
“It is with great pleasure that I turn over the gavel to Tom Finnegan, ASPPA’s incoming president. I have had the privilege of working with Tom for the last several years on the Executive Committee and for this past year as President-elect. I could not have asked for a better colleague in carrying out my duties, and ASPPA could not ask for a better person to lead it for the coming year,” said Sheldon H. Smith, ASPPA’s immediate past president.
Finnegan has more than 25 years actuarial experience working with all types of qualified and non-qualified retirement plans and is a principal of The Savitz Organization in Philadelphia, Pa. He has also worked as a senior actuary for a major employee benefits consulting firm and as the director of retirement plan services for a mid-sized regional consulting firm. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from St. Joseph’s University.
“ASPPA has brought a standard of professionalism to the retirement industry for more than 44 years. My goal as president is to continue that tradition and increase the quality and expertise of our members. Currently in the industry, it’s known that when you engage an ASPPA member—you get a professional, but I hope to bring that recognition to attorneys, accountants and plan sponsors. I look forward to working with our more than 7, 400 members to make this happen,” said Finnegan, ASPPA President.
Finnegan is a fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (Academy) where he serves on their board. For the past two years, he has represented ASPPA and the ASPPA College of Pension Actuaries (ACOPA) on the Council of U.S. Presidents (CUSP) and the North American Actuarial Council (NAAC). Finnegan received ASPPA’s Educator’s Award in 2008, and is a frequent speaker at regional and national benefit and actuarial conferences. He has also authored articles for national actuarial publications as well as regional newsletters.
